The Challenge 

Edwin Landseer painted The Challenge in the 19th century, capturing a lone stag amidst the rugged Scottish landscape. Landseer was known for his sentimental depictions of animals, often imbuing them with human-like qualities. This work reflects the Victorian era’s fascination with the natural world. Yet, we must also consider the complex social dynamics at play. Landseer's paintings contributed to the romanticization of the Scottish Highlands, even as they glossed over the harsh realities of life for the rural population.
