This plaquette, "David Triumphant Over Goliath," was made in the early 16th century by Moderno, also known as Galeazzo Mondella, in Italy, using bronze. Bronze casting is an ancient technology, involving the creation of a mold, usually in sand, into which molten metal is poured. In this case, the artist would have first sculpted the scene in wax, then made a mold around it. Once the wax was melted out, the bronze could be poured in. Look closely, and you can see the incredible detail achieved. The rippling muscles of David, the texture of Goliath's severed head, the ornate architectural details in the background. This wasn't just a demonstration of technical virtuosity. Bronze was an expensive material, and casting required specialized knowledge and equipment. This suggests that the plaquette was intended for a wealthy patron, someone who appreciated both the artistry and the labor involved in its creation. It speaks to the complex relationship between artistic skill, economic power, and the enduring appeal of biblical stories.
