An Infantryman of the Strélitz Corps 1764
Dimensions Sheet: 19.5 Ã 12.5 cm (7 11/16 Ã 4 15/16 in.)
Editor: Here we see "An Infantryman of the Strélitz Corps" by Jean-Baptiste Le Prince, a drawing on a relatively small sheet. The figure looks somewhat severe, standing in this sketchy landscape, holding what appears to be a flail. What jumps out at you when you look at this work? Curator: You know, it's funny, the first thing I notice is the... energy. It's like a visual echo of a harsh command, all angles and intent. I wonder if Le Prince, in his own way, wasn't trying to capture something of the weight of authority, or perhaps, the brutal reality of the Strélitz. What do you think? Editor: That makes sense. I was only looking at the surface. Thank you. Curator: My pleasure. It's always about peeling back the layers, isn't it?
