Egbert van Panderen's "Evangelist Marcus" (c. 1590-1637) depicts Saint Mark, the author of the second Gospel, writing at his desk. A lion, his traditional symbol, is depicted in the background, echoing his name "Mark" (Latin: Marcus), which sounds like the Latin word for lion ("leo"). The inscription below in Latin reads "The form of the lion is next to Mark: a roar of the lion, a cry: Your path is flat." This print is a fine example of Dutch art in the 16th century, and is currently housed at the Rijksmuseum.
