This is a ‘Happy New Year’ card from the New Years 1890 series, produced by the Kinney Brothers Tobacco Company. These cards offer a glimpse into the cultural landscape of the late 19th century, when the burgeoning advertising industry began to intersect with holiday traditions. What strikes me about this piece is the contrast between the idyllic winter scene, framed by holly and mistletoe, and its origin as a promotional item for a tobacco company. During this time, tobacco use was being heavily marketed. The imagery of warmth and cheerfulness becomes complicated when viewed through the lens of public health concerns of the time. The card invites us to reflect on the complex relationships between commerce, culture, and personal well-being, which feels eerily relevant today, doesn't it?
