Charles Gibbons made "BoxCar 11" using what looks like some kind of printing process and bold colours. This work feels like a record of a performance, a visual score where process takes centre stage. The texture is intriguing. It's almost like looking at topographical map. The rhythmic lines, especially in the purple section, create a hypnotic effect. You can almost feel the pressure of the tool used to make those marks. Then there's the yellow, a kind of sunny explosion that contrasts with the more controlled purple. The way the colours bleed and blend, particularly where the purple meets the yellow, creates a sense of movement. It reminds me a little of the work of someone like Terry Winters, with his interest in systems and patterns, but Gibbons brings a more playful energy. Ultimately, it's a reminder that art is about exploration, a conversation that never really ends.
