Curator: This is a work by Ian Breakwell, from his series of sequential image and text pieces. It comprises photographic strips paired with handwritten observations, creating a kind of diary entry. Editor: It feels melancholic, almost like a stage play seen through a keyhole. The repetition of architectural forms, these stark contrasts...it's intriguing. Curator: The recurring phrase "In the locked and empty theatre" really frames the piece. Each day – Thursday through Sunday – brings a slightly different scene and observation. Editor: The handwritten text adds a layer of intimacy. It's like eavesdropping on someone's thoughts as they watch this peculiar performance. What do you make of that circling dog on Sunday? Curator: Breakwell often explored themes of surveillance, observation, and the everyday absurdities of modern life. The dog, perhaps, represents a kind of aimless wandering, a commentary on routine. Editor: I like that. The mundane, elevated to art. It makes me want to peek behind the curtain myself. Curator: Precisely. Breakwell invites us to question what we see, and how we interpret it.
