Pieter Janson made this etching, "Landscape with Farmhouse and Well," likely during the late 18th or early 19th century. The artwork presents an idyllic view of rural life, but it’s worth considering what this image leaves out. The etching captures a moment of serene, pastoral life, seemingly untouched by the social and economic upheavals of the era. But, as we consider the image, we might wonder about the lives of those who worked the land, about the labour that sustained this vision of tranquility. Janson’s work, while seemingly straightforward, prompts us to think about the stories that landscapes tell and the perspectives they often obscure. It invites us to reflect on how the beauty of the natural world is intertwined with histories of labour, and on the complex relationship between representation and reality.
