Isadore Goldberg made this drawing of a "Chair" with watercolor. It's funny, isn't it, how an everyday object can become this fascinating subject? I'm drawn to the way the washes of brown and tan create depth. The textures in the chair, like the woven seat, are so carefully rendered. You can almost feel the roughness. Goldberg really knew how to capture the essence of a thing. I keep coming back to how the color is layered so delicately, so transparently. It’s a kind of tender observation. Thinking about this chair, it makes me think about how something like an object can be about so much more than just its function. It's about seeing and feeling, and that's what art is all about. It reminds me a little of Giorgio Morandi, who, like Goldberg, found endless inspiration in simple, humble forms.
