This -Pirate Chest- still bank was made in Chicago by the E. J. Kahn Co. Look at this little pirate trapped in his chest! The painterly approach to this object has a real sense of play to it. The colours are applied in a way that feels intuitive, almost like a child's drawing. It's fascinating how the textures and colours interact. The rusty gold and dark brown create a sense of age and mystery. The paint is applied relatively thickly, with visible brushstrokes that add to the object's handmade quality. The pirate's face has a slightly grotesque quality. It contrasts with the rigid geometry of the trunk itself. The padlock adds a level of security, or maybe it's a joke. Is it a treasure chest, or a prison? It reminds me a little of Red Grooms in its approach to colour. The artist has a similar sensibility in their treatment of pop-cultural subjects with humour and irreverence. It's a reminder that art can be serious and playful at the same time!
