This is "Mallard Duck and Snow-covered Reeds" by Utagawa Hiroshige. It is a woodblock print. The scene presents a striking composition dominated by the diagonal lines of snow-laden reeds that bisect the frame. The texture of the snow is palpable, contrasting with the smooth, almost geometric patterns of the duck's plumage. Hiroshige masterfully employs asymmetry and empty space to guide our eye through the scene. The duck, rendered with meticulous detail, becomes a focal point, its presence amplified by the surrounding void. This minimalist approach evokes a sense of serene isolation. The subdued palette, primarily blues and greys, enhances the mood of quiet contemplation. The structural interplay between natural elements and precise lines reveals Hiroshige’s engagement with spatial harmony and the delicate balance of nature. This print invites us to contemplate the profound beauty found within simplicity.

The more studied approach to the depiction of this duck, as well as the overlapping of compositional elements suggests the stylistic influence of the Kano school on Hiroshige. However, the woodblock printing techniques that allowed the snowflakes to be rendered in negative reserve against graduated fields of blue and gray brings a novel freshness to the design. The haiku echoes the wintry mood of the scene: Ducks cry and windmakes the ripples on the water.
