Xu Hongming made this painting, 非云非雾非QI系列作品015, with who knows what, since we don't have a date for it. It's like a soft explosion of color, bleeding and blending into the canvas, an ethereal haze. The texture feels crucial here. It’s not about hiding the canvas, but letting it breathe through the layers. The orange, yellow, and pink aren't laid on thick, but diluted, almost staining the fabric. Look closely, and you can see how the pigment pools and settles, creating subtle gradations. The way that lower right section bleeds out feels both accidental and totally intentional, a dance between control and letting go. This reminds me of Helen Frankenthaler's soak-stain paintings, where she poured thinned paint onto unprimed canvas. There's a similar embrace of process, a willingness to let the material dictate the outcome. Ultimately, it's a reminder that art is an ongoing conversation, a constant pushing and pulling between artists and ideas.
