Auguste Raffet made this print, "Carpenter with comrades drinking wine", in nineteenth-century France, using etching and engraving techniques. Here, we observe a group of workers gathered, presumably after a long day's labor, sharing wine. The print gives us insight into the culture of the working class in France during the industrial revolution. Note the slogan below the image, "Wine is the milk of the worker," reflecting the importance of wine in their daily lives. The setting, likely a tavern, suggests a space where camaraderie and relaxation were found. Raffet's work often depicted military and working-class life, and this image is no exception. By studying such art, along with historical documents and accounts, we can gain insights into the social and cultural conditions of the past, and to understand the values and daily lives of ordinary people.
