Roderic O'Conor created 'The Farm' using paint to explore landscape in a radical way. The painting is a tapestry of dappled light and fragmented forms, dominated by an expressive field of warm yellows and reds leading up to the solid blocks of colour of the foliage. O’Conor uses small, deliberate brushstrokes to construct the scene, fracturing the light and surfaces into a mosaic of colour. This technique not only captures the fleeting quality of light but also destabilizes traditional artistic expectations, challenging fixed perspectives. The solidity we expect from land and architecture is broken down into its component colours. The structural juxtaposition of the sweeping field against the more densely coloured trees and buildings creates a dynamic tension. In this way, O’Conor engages with the semiotic interpretation of landscape, inviting us to consider how our perception of space and form is not fixed, but is actively constructed through visual cues and cultural conditioning.
