Willem Charles Magnenat created this print in 1865 to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the Military William Order. Created during a time of shifting national identities and military restructuring in the Netherlands, this print reflects the socio-political climate of the time. The Military William Order was – and remains – the highest honor for bravery, primarily awarded to military personnel. But what does bravery really mean, and who gets to define it? The portraits of military figures are predominantly of men from privileged backgrounds, highlighting the gendered and class-based dimensions of military service and heroism. While celebrating military achievements, the print also silently acknowledges the complex power dynamics inherent in the exercise of military force. The imagery evokes a sense of national pride, but it also invites us to reflect on the experiences of those excluded from such narratives of valor. As you consider this print, reflect on how such symbols of national identity shape our understanding of history and belonging. Whose stories are amplified, and whose remain in the shadows?
