This Untitled painting by Luis Feito is an exercise in monochrome abstraction. It's a really good example of how limiting your palette can actually open up new possibilities. Looking at the surface, the texture is key: Feito’s using a thick, almost cakey paint and you can see the marks of the brush dancing across the canvas. Those splodges, the ragged edges, the way the black bleeds into the white around it – all so physical. The paint is opaque, so it feels like the artist is building up the image, adding layer upon layer. Think of the bottom left corner, with its jagged, dark shapes. It's so confident and bold but also a little messy. This piece reminds me a bit of Franz Kline’s work. Both artists explore the tension between gesture and form, but Feito brings a certain lightness to his mark-making. For me, what’s really exciting is the ongoing conversation between artists, the ways they build on each other’s ideas, and turn them into something completely new.
