Majel G. Claflin made this 'Colcha' design on paper with what looks like gouache or maybe tempera, but who really knows? The beauty is in the not knowing, right? There's something so unapologetically straightforward about the color choices. A kind of brown that doesn't try to be fancy, a blue that just *is* blue. It’s like Claflin wasn't trying to impress anyone. The paint application is so flat and direct, like she's stamping color onto the page, embracing the physical properties of the paint. Look at how the brown outlines the central flower shape, creating this almost comical, slightly wobbly form. It’s these imperfections that give it life. This piece reminds me a bit of some of the bolder, graphic choices you find in early Miró, that same sense of playful experimentation with form. Ultimately, this Colcha design stands as a testament to the idea that art is an ongoing conversation, full of quirks, missteps, and happy accidents.
