Johan Noman created this print, "Het lyden van Jezus," which translates to "The Suffering of Jesus," sometime before 1833. The sequence of scenes from the life and Passion of Christ is rich in symbols. Consider, for instance, the early scene of Christ's birth beneath the radiant star—a motif of divine guidance also seen in depictions of pagan gods. Then observe Christ’s crucifixion, a visual representation that evolved from the cross as a simple instrument of execution to become a potent symbol of salvation. The crucifixion echoes through centuries of art, from the stark depictions of the early Renaissance to the dramatic portrayals of the Baroque era. This symbol transcends its literal meaning, tapping into a deep, collective memory of sacrifice and redemption. The emotional impact is profound, evoking empathy and contemplation. Each reinterpretation reflects the changing cultural and psychological landscapes. The symbols resonate with us still.
