This photograph was made by Thomas Roma using black and white film, and traditional darkroom printing techniques. The photograph’s impact comes from its composition. The textures of the wood of the pews, and the woman’s intricately patterned blouse contrast with her smooth skin, and all are registered in a range of grayscale tones. Roma expertly coaxes a range of tones from his materials. This creates both a sense of depth and intimacy. The labor involved in Roma's meticulous darkroom practice, as well as the labor of the woman at prayer, are both intrinsic to the photograph. These are ways of working, even ways of being, that take time. This is a photograph about the relationship of time and the human spirit. It’s a powerful reminder that photography is not only about seeing but also about making.
