Editor: Here we have Orville A. Carroll’s "Bonnet," a watercolor drawing dating from sometime between 1935 and 1942. The drawing has such an academic feel to it. I wonder, how can we begin to interpret this simple image? Curator: Focus on the geometry. The bonnet is built from juxtaposed geometric volumes. Observe the stark contrast of textures; the smooth fabric of the drape in comparison with the straw texture of the upper portion of the bonnet. The ribbon introduces an almost diagrammatic linearity to the otherwise volumetric piece. Editor: The straw-like texture really stands out! What does that choice in materiality do for the work? Curator: Precisely! It interrupts the continuity of the gray hues and directs your eye up the z-axis to linger upon the artist's handiwork. Observe the gradient of light in the fabric; there's a careful orchestration of shadows. Does this modulation have an effect? Editor: It definitely feels very calculated, with that strategic interplay of light and shadow bringing out such fine, refined volume! It certainly adds to the overall air of quiet contemplation. Are we meant to consider more than just the visible reality of the object? Curator: Note the artist's ability to find the latent geometry within what appears to be an organic configuration of fabric. He directs your focus through deliberate acts of construction and erasure using watercolor. Editor: Looking at this artwork now, it's evident the intention was never just about depicting a bonnet. Curator: We’ve moved beyond simple representation into an engagement with form, volume, and texture! It's a semiotic investigation contained within a seemingly simple image.
