Kitagawa Utamaro made this print, Amorous Couple, in the late 18th century using woodblock printing techniques. The image is made by carving a design into a block of wood, inking it, and then pressing paper against it to transfer the image. The process starts with drawing and calligraphy, followed by carving blocks for each color. The key block is carved first, then different blocks were prepared for each color and carefully aligned when printing so the colors did not overlap. The end result shows thin black outlines, filled in with blocks of subtly contrasting shades of gray and black. These labor-intensive processes, combined with the natural variations in the wood, add character to each print. The materials and processes used here offer unique textures and visual qualities, inviting us to consider the cultural and aesthetic values embedded in this intimate portrayal. By appreciating these techniques, we gain a deeper understanding of the artistic craftsmanship involved. It challenges traditional distinctions between fine art and craft.
