Editor: This watercolor is "Kenilworth Castle" by Peter De Wint. It's quite atmospheric, and the castle seems to blend into the landscape. What does this piece communicate to you? Curator: Consider the labor involved in both building the castle and then depicting it. De Wint is using readily available materials—paper, pigment, water—to represent a structure built with immense resources and labor. How does that inform our understanding of power and representation? Editor: That's a really interesting way to consider it. I hadn't thought about the socio-economic implications of the materials themselves. Curator: It highlights the divide between those who build and those who depict. Editor: Thanks, that makes me think about landscape painting differently now.
