Bed warmer c. 18th century

This is an antique bed warmer, its creator unknown, now residing in the Minneapolis Institute of Art. The circular brass pan, connected to a wooden handle, presents a fascinating study in contrasts. The dominant circular form, a symbol of continuity and wholeness, is perforated with a grid of small holes, disrupting the surface and hinting at the object's function – the release of warmth. The engraved floral patterns create an intricate play of light and shadow.
