sculpture

I imagine Michael Bolus made this sculpture out of painted sheets of steel, maybe in the 1960s. I can see him, perhaps in his studio, puzzling over how to make color float in space. The planes of color – coral, orange, blues – shift in relation to one another, connected by these minimal silver supports. I love the way the planes tilt, creating a subtle rhythm and sense of movement, like pages turning in a book, or a fan opening. The sculpture has a lightness and airiness, which contrasts with the industrial materials used to make it. It reminds me of the work of Sol LeWitt and other minimalists who were exploring geometry, color, and space in new ways. There’s a conversation happening between these artists; each one testing the limits of what sculpture can be. Bolus's sculpture seems to embrace uncertainty, inviting us to see new possibilities in abstract forms. It’s playful and thought-provoking, revealing something new each time you look at it.
