André Dauchez made this etching, called "L'Entrée du Kergos," the entrance to Kergos, and it's like he's inviting us into a secret world. The etching feels so alive, doesn't it? It’s all about these delicate lines, a web of marks creating depth, like the trees are breathing right there on the paper. Look at the way the light filters through the trees, how the lines dance and create texture. It's not just about seeing, it's about feeling the roughness of the bark, the stillness of the air. Notice how the artist doesn't hide the process, you can see all the tiny marks, a trace of the hand, and for me that’s the heart of it. Dauchez reminds me of Whistler, that interest in atmosphere and mood, but he also strikes me as an illustrator, in the best sense. It’s like he's telling a story, and inviting us to fill in the blanks. Art, after all, is a conversation, never a final word.
