Gustave Doré created 'Christian Martyrs' in the 19th century using graphite, and gray wash on paper. The choice of graphite and wash is interesting. These are materials of tonal exploration, allowing for a wide range of light and shadow, which Doré uses to great effect in this dramatic scene. You see the marks of the artist’s hand in the hatching and cross-hatching that build up the forms, especially the steps and figures. It is this very labor-intensive process that gives the artwork its sense of depth and volume. Doré masterfully uses the gray wash to create an atmosphere of gloom and despair, emphasizing the harsh realities faced by early Christians. This highly detailed drawing reveals the artist’s skill in evoking emotion and narrative through simple means. It reminds us that even the most humble materials can be transformed into powerful statements. And that what seems like just a drawing is also the result of hard work, and the product of Doré's social context.
