"Een Veerschip op Hoorn, Enckhuyſen Vrieflant of overzee" is a 1642 etching by Dirk Eversen Lons depicting a Dutch sailing ship, a veerschip. The vessel is portrayed in an oval frame, which was a popular format for Dutch maritime prints of the time. The artwork is a fine example of the Dutch Golden Age's fascination with the sea and its importance to the nation's economy and global reach. The detail on the sails, mast, and rigging, as well as the calm sea suggest a quiet scene of nautical life, in contrast to the more dramatic depictions of storms and battles common in the genre. The Rijksmuseum houses this small, finely crafted work (measuring just 229 mm in height and 163 mm in width).
