Theodor Severin Kittelsen, a Norwegian artist, created "Ikke Kjoerende Og Ikke Ridende" with charcoal and pencil to delve into the realms of folklore and nature. Kittelsen’s work often emerges from a place of profound personal experience; he grew up in poverty. This piece, whose title translates to “Neither Driving Nor Riding,” depicts a woman and a ram beneath a starry sky. She stands, feet bare, upon the animal's back, draped in what appears to be a net. It is tempting to situate this piece within the context of Norwegian folklore. The natural world is often imbued with spirits and supernatural beings. Are we to understand her as a mythical being neither walking nor riding, but existing in an ambiguous in-between? Kittelsen's work offers a space to reflect on the delicate balance between humanity and the natural world. In his own words, he sought to capture "the soul of the Norwegian landscape." This drawing certainly does that, while invoking a quiet, ethereal moment.
