Here, we have an untitled work by Sandu Darie, an artist who spent much of his life navigating the complexities of cultural identity and political expression under the Romanian Communist regime. Darie, like many artists of his time, sought a visual language that could transcend ideological constraints, which is perhaps why this abstract geometric composition, featuring bold color contrasts and directional arrows, feels so potent. The upward and downward thrust of the red arrows, set against fields of yellow and green, could be seen as a visual metaphor for the tensions between personal aspiration and political repression. Darie had to balance his artistic vision with the socio-political landscape, so one might consider how such visual elements embody the push and pull of conformity and individuality. What does it mean to create art when your voice is mediated by the state? This work serves as a reminder of the quiet resistance embedded in abstraction.
