Cor van Teesling drew "Laundry with Note" with graphite on paper in 1942, just months before his death. Imagine him there, hunched over this small piece of paper, focusing all his attention on these folds of cloth. You can almost feel the soft give of the fabric beneath your fingertips, the delicate play of light and shadow. I can’t help but think, what was he thinking about when he made it? Was he simply trying to record what he saw, or was he trying to capture something more? The lines are soft, tentative, like he was feeling his way through the darkness. The note pinned to the laundry…whose name is written there? Was he thinking of that person? It makes me think about the act of drawing itself, how it can be a way of bearing witness to the world, even in the darkest of times. Teesling may never have known the impact his work would have, but his act of creation continues to speak to us today. We are always building on each other's efforts, responding to each other's questions, inspiring each other's creativity.
