Zhang Feng painted "Magpies with Plum Blossom" using ink on paper, a striking example of monochrome art. The stark contrast between the ink and the blank paper immediately draws the eye, creating a visually arresting image. The composition is dominated by a plum branch that curves diagonally, creating a dynamic tension. The magpies, depicted with delicate brushstrokes, are positioned to balance this asymmetry, adding movement to the overall scene. The sparseness invites contemplation, typical of its era. Through the interplay of positive and negative space, Zhang Feng invites us to consider the relationship between presence and absence, fullness and emptiness. This artwork invites us to explore the depth of meaning that can be conveyed through the simplest of means. It remains a testament to the enduring power of ink as a medium for artistic expression.

Birds could convey good wishes and greetings through the puns on their names, which conjure up verbal associations with lucky ideas. Xique (magpie), for instance, is an auspicious bird whose caw heralds the approach of good fortune. Its name in Chinese forms a pun on the word xie ("happiness" and "joy."). Together with the plum blossom, a flower blooming in late winter and representing renewal and heralding spring, the composition expresses a good wish: "Magpies herald the arrival of the spring" (xique baochun).
