This is a stereo card, so it's two identical photographic prints mounted side-by-side, creating a single three-dimensional image when viewed through a stereoscope. The overall effect is a kind of architectural study in sepia tones. I find myself drawn to the way the anonymous artist or photographer has captured this government building in Johannesburg. It’s not just a record; it’s an atmosphere. The texture of the print is almost like a memory itself, faded and worn, with all these subtle tonal variations across the façade of the building and the open plaza. There’s a quality, especially in the shadows, that reminds me of Rothko, not in color, obviously, but in the way the gradations evoke a mood, a feeling of history and place. The very nature of photography invites us to consider the relationship between documentation and artistry. Ultimately, art thrives in ambiguity, and in photography as in painting, meaning is rarely fixed, but constantly shifting.
