Richard Tepe made this photograph, "Bridge over a River," using gelatin silver print sometime between 1870 and 1930. It’s cool how this guy captured this river with its bridge, slicing through a band of light. You can almost feel the moment he chose to release the shutter. He could have cropped it tighter, I guess, or boosted the contrast... but I admire how he kept it simple. It feels almost accidental, like a snapshot. I can almost imagine him experimenting in the darkroom with various techniques. And it makes me think about the conversation between painters and photographers, how we're all chasing light and shadow, trying to capture something fleeting. It's an ongoing dialogue, a back-and-forth of ideas and approaches, each inspiring the other to see the world in new ways.
