David Burliuk made this painting, Spring in Pennsylvania, with oil on canvas. Look at the scene Burliuk has conjured up, how the colours seem to vibrate and the air buzzes around. I can imagine him working on it, maybe *en plein air*, really layering the paint, dot after dot, to capture the feeling of spring. It reminds me of Van Gogh, who, let’s not forget, also saw the world in a very particular way. There’s something so tender about the figures in the painting, tending to the land. You can imagine the artist seeing them there and then going home to paint it. Burliuk's marks are like his own distinct handwriting, each one imbued with feeling and energy. I think all painters leave a trace of themselves, and in that way, artists from different eras and places are in constant communication, borrowing and building on each other's work.
