This cream pitcher, made by Hobbs, Brockunier and Company, presents a delicate milk-white surface adorned with stylized botanical motifs. These aren't mere decorations, but echoes of nature's bounty, rendered in glass. Observe how the leaf patterns evoke both classical acanthus leaves and perhaps ears of wheat, symbols of abundance and prosperity, deeply rooted in ancient agricultural societies. Consider their presence on Roman cornices, or even in Egyptian depictions of offerings to the gods. Here, in the late 19th century, these motifs resurface. Perhaps the rising industrial class subconsciously yearned for a connection to a more agrarian past, or to simply display wealth. Regardless, notice that in these objects we see the non-linear progression of symbols, evolving, and recurring in new contexts.
