This stereograph shows us a rocky coast of South Africa, and was made by an anonymous artist. The muted sepia tones and the way the image is doubled creates a strange kind of depth. I’m interested in the anonymous aspect. I wonder, what does it mean when a vision, a way of seeing, is presented without a known author? The grainy texture and the stark contrast between light and shadow give the rocks a monumental quality. The artist, though unknown, has a clear sense of composition, leading our eye through the landscape. The rocks themselves feel almost like figures, each with its own unique shape and character, standing in conversation. Maybe anonymity invites us to project our own narratives onto the scene. Like, what if this image wasn't so different from, say, a Giorgio Morandi still life. The kind of painting that presents everyday objects as profound studies in form and light. Art isn't just about who makes it, but what it makes us see and feel.
