Sue Coe created this unsettling print, "Terrorist", using charcoal or graphite, to challenge our perceptions of identity, fear, and power. Coe, born in post-war Britain, confronts the viewer with stark, high contrast imagery asking, “Terrorists or Freedom Fighters?” Coe's prints often depict scenes of social injustice and animal cruelty. Her work is characterized by its unflinching look at the dark underbelly of society. The image in front of us makes us question who we consider to be on the margins, who is feared, and who is valorized. The emotional weight of the piece is palpable; the eyes of the figure and the dog convey fear and vulnerability. Coe uses her art as a tool for social commentary, challenging viewers to confront uncomfortable truths about power and oppression. She once stated "My job is to go to the dark places." This print, with its emotional intensity, reflects the complexities of political conflict and forces us to confront our own biases.
