Robert Frank's photograph, Table/Mallorca, is a quiet moment captured on film. It pictures a simple table and chair, probably taken at night. The scene is lit by a couple of bare bulbs in the distance. I like how Frank composes with shadow here. It’s like he's asking: what does it mean to photograph nothing much? I imagine him, wandering at night, looking for something to shoot. Maybe he's bored or lonely. It’s pretty dark, and you can feel the texture of the grainy film; it almost feels like the dark gritty surfaces he was known for. The little pool of light on the table suggests a human presence, a sense of waiting. Frank reminds us that photography doesn’t need a lot of action. Sometimes, the most interesting things happen when we’re just sitting around, letting the world come to us. In this photo, Frank invites us to consider the beauty and complexity of the everyday. It is a poetic invitation into the stillness of being.
