We’re looking at Jan Veth’s "Standing Female Nude, Front View," a drawing he made sometime between 1874 and 1925, now housed at the Rijksmuseum. The realism is quite captivating. Curator: It’s more than just realism. The staff she is holding… It’s less a prop and more an extension of herself. There’s something both classical and oddly modern about it. Almost like a symbol for discipline, structure and strength. It seems that the staff transforms into an emblematic symbol for what might be a modern understanding of the classical figure in contrapposto pose. Editor: It's interesting that you mention that the pose creates a very gendered symbol for feminine independence for me. I am thinking a lot about what claiming space would have meant to a woman artist during the time that Veth was working.
