This drawing of three cherubs playing with weapons was created by Jacob de Wit, sometime between the late 17th and early 18th century. Executed in brown ink and wash on paper, the limited tonal range gives a striking yet subdued sense of depth. De Wit has constructed a scene in which the putti are strategically arranged. They are engaging in a battle of their own invention. Notice the cherub holding a shield and spear, another brandishing a sword, and the third, a bundle of arrows. De Wit uses the arrangement of the figures to create a balanced but dynamic composition. Each cherub is rendered with detailed, flowing lines that define their cherubic forms. The hatching and cross-hatching techniques used to create shadows contribute to the overall sense of volume, which plays with the ideas of allegory and symbolism. The drawing, with its classical undertones, invites us to reflect on the complex interplay between innocence and the symbolism of war. The composition is not just an arrangement of figures but a deliberate orchestration of forms, lines, and tones that collectively engage with historical and intellectual contexts.
