Kazuo Nakamura made Composition 10-51 with a brush, some paint, and a whole lotta vision. I can imagine him feeling the freedom to mark-make, almost like doodling, across a washed and stained background that gives the painting a real depth. The black lines create a network of interconnected shapes, like a city grid seen from above, or maybe a complex mathematical equation brought to life. I wonder if Nakamura was thinking about the relationship between art and science here? There's a kind of order to it, but also a beautiful chaos, don't you think? The paint looks pretty thin, allowing the texture of the canvas to show through. It reminds me a bit of some of the early abstract expressionists, who were also trying to find new ways of representing the world around them. It’s like Nakamura is inviting us to see the world in a new light, as a place of endless possibilities and connections.
