Editor: This is "Verso: Compositional Figure Sketches, and Architectural and Monument Sketches" by John Flaxman. It looks like a page from a sketchbook. There are architectural details and also what appear to be human figures in simple lines. What's your take on this piece? Curator: Flaxman lived during a period of intense social and political upheaval, including the French Revolution and the rise of industrialization. How might these architectural sketches, alongside these figures, represent his response to societal shifts and the role of the individual within them? Editor: That's interesting. I hadn't thought about how the architecture and figures might be in conversation with each other. Curator: Consider also that Flaxman was a proponent of abolition. Do you think the arrangement of the figures or their gestures could be interpreted through the lens of social justice? Editor: It's definitely something to consider. I see them more as practice sketches. Curator: Perhaps, but art rarely exists in a vacuum. Engaging with these different layers allows us to unearth deeper meanings and consider its impact. Editor: I see your point. Thanks! Curator: It's been a thought-provoking discussion!
