This vase, made by St. Lukas, is decorated with fish and water plants in multiple colours. You can imagine it being slowly turned as the painter dabs and brushes, the colours shifting and shimmering like light on water. I can just imagine the artist, maybe working in a group, thinking about nature, about the way fish move, maybe even feeling a little bit like a fish in water, moving with the flow. The vase itself has a kind of fluid shape, like a drop of water elongated, and the painted decorations of fish and plants swim around it. The brushstrokes are delicate, almost translucent, giving the impression of a world seen through water. It reminds me a bit of Japanese prints, with their flat planes and decorative patterns, but also of the Arts and Crafts movement, with its emphasis on nature and handmade objects. In the end, painting is a kind of conversation across time, artists responding to each other, inspiring each other to see the world in new ways.
