This brass candlestick was made by Albert Reimann. The solid geometry makes me imagine a factory with the sparks flying, bending and soldering the thing into shape! I'm curious what Reimann was thinking when he made this, because it feels very self-consciously modern, like he wanted to prove something. What kind of candle does it hold? I'm picturing a very thin, elegant taper, because this design is very sleek. The curve of the handle, mimicking the letter "D" and echoing the square planes, somehow, is so smooth and perfect; that’s where the action is. The burnished gold of the brass and the way the surfaces interact with the light—it all feels considered and precise. This contrasts so strongly with painting; it lacks the mess and the vulnerability! But it's still beautiful, still an object of function and of art. Reimann, like all artists, was in conversation with his peers and those who came before him and perhaps this is his response to a question he’s asking about the nature of beauty.
