Gil Elvgren made this painting called Cover Up, using oil, in that era when it was all about a certain kind of idealized beauty. Look at how Elvgren handles the yellow of the dress, it’s almost as if he’s sculpting with the paint, building up layers to catch the light just so. It makes you think about the physical act of painting, the way each brushstroke contributes to the whole picture. There's a real energy in the way he blends and softens the edges, a dance between precision and letting go. The texture is smooth, almost porcelain-like, but then you notice the subtle brushwork, especially in the folds of the fabric, where the paint seems to thicken, creating shadows. The red of her lips, the car interior and the wheel trim all sings out against the blues and yellow, which sort of makes it feel alive. Elvgren reminds me a little of someone like John Currin, who also plays with these old-fashioned ideas but with a wink. Art isn’t about perfect answers, right? It’s about keeping the conversation going.
