This is Pieter Schenk’s print of the Venus Fountain in the garden of the Villa d’Este at Tivoli. Created around the turn of the 18th century, it captures an era marked by the patronage of the arts as a display of power and prestige. Here, the artist offers us an idyllic vision of leisure and pleasure. Yet, there is a tension in viewing such scenes. While the gardens offer a space of recreation for some, they are also a construct built upon the labors of others, a stark reminder of the social hierarchies of the time. Note how the figures are arranged in the garden, some seemingly at ease, others actively engaged in service or play, their roles dictated by social standing. It is important to consider the emotional and personal dimensions within these historical contexts, as well as the complex layers of identity and history that are embedded in it.
