Editor: This is William Roberts' "Study for 'Guarding the Masterpiece'," and what I notice first is the unusual grid underneath the sketch. It gives it an almost architectural feel, even though the figures feel quite playful. What's your take on this piece? Curator: The grid is key. It imposes a sense of order, doesn't it? Yet, the figures retain a charming awkwardness. Perhaps it's a dance between control and spontaneity, like a dream trying to fit into a spreadsheet. What do you think Roberts was trying to protect? Editor: Maybe not a specific painting, but the idea of art itself? Thanks, I never thought about it that way. Curator: It's all a bit of a guessing game, isn't it? And isn't that the best part?
