Giuseppe Canale created this etching, “Seated Woman Winding Yarn,” where lines define the scene's structure and create contrasts between light and shadow. Notice how the web of lines forms the woman's figure and the winding mechanism with very few solid forms. The composition arranges the elements in a triangular form, with the woman's head at the apex, creating balance and directing our gaze. The lines vary in thickness and direction; hatching suggests depth and volume, defining the texture of the fabrics and the form of the objects. The cross-hatching is not uniform, which adds dynamism to the image. The linear technique renders the subject with an analytical, almost diagrammatic quality. The woman is depicted in a moment of domestic productivity but she is also reduced to a network of lines which emphasize the artwork's formal qualities. The emphasis on the interplay of lines and their arrangement turns the scene into an exercise in pure form.
