Rudolf Eickemeyer made this photograph called Winter Landscape, we don't know exactly when. It’s a small, intimate scene, mostly grey, and all about texture. I’m drawn to the footprints in the snow, the way they wind up the little hill. Each step is a little dent, a dark mark in the otherwise blank field. It reminds me of printmaking, how a single mark can make so much difference. You can almost feel the crunch of the snow, and the cold air. There's a house in the background, but it feels distant, like a dream. It’s quiet, like a Morandi painting, but with a touch of human presence. Making art is a little like walking in the snow, leaving your mark on a blank canvas. And just like in life, each step leads to another.
