The inscription in French, "Vitre afsustance s'il vous plait pour un pauvre marchand de firemage... Eur brave homme," mocks Willem's request for support as if he were a beggar. This politically charged caricature, now in the Rijksmuseum, provides a glimpse into the tensions between the Netherlands and England in the early 19th century.
