This satirical print, "Willem I verzoekt Engeland tevergeefs om bijstand," created between 1830 and 1831 by an anonymous artist, depicts King Willem I of the Netherlands pleading with a haughty figure representing England for assistance during a difficult political period. The inscription in French, "Vitre afsustance s'il vous plait pour un pauvre marchand de firemage... Eur brave homme," mocks Willem's request for support as if he were a beggar. This politically charged caricature, now in the Rijksmuseum, provides a glimpse into the tensions between the Netherlands and England in the early 19th century.
